iPhone in India might be selling for well over 200 USD. As long as it doesn't force me into an expensive multi-year contract, I am fine paying a little more money up-front. And if they sell it unlocked - nothing like it - after all both Vodafone and Airtel are both gonna sell the iPhone so a locked phone isn't really a competitive advantage.

Airtel CEO: No subsidy on iPhone in India
iPhone in India might be selling for well over 200 USD. As long as it doesn't force me into an expensive multi-year contract, I am fine paying a little more money up-front. And if they sell it unlocked - nothing like it - after all both Vodafone and Airtel are both gonna sell the iPhone so a locked phone isn't really a competitive advantage.
